Winning Poster Design

Winning poster designer John Dennis was born and raised in Louisville, graduating from DuPont Manual High School in 1989. He earned his BFA in graphic design from Pratt Institute in 1993, is married and has a three year old daughter.

After college Dennis lived in Charlotte, North Carolina, before moving home to Louisville to be close to family. He has worked as a graphic design artist at Price Weber, Black and White Design, and currently works an art director for the Cubero Group.

“I entered Louisville’s International Festival of Film poster competition because I thought the subject offered the opportunity to do something fun,” comments Dennis. “The fact that it’s the inaugural year of the festival is exciting – I’m thrilled to have won!”

The inspiration for the winning poster design came from the artist’s desire to use an image that reflects Louisville’s most famous industry – horse racing – and add a twist to it. Dennis has created a bold poster design to appeal to film makers, festival goers, and art poster collectors. The lawn jockey is a welcoming figure. Whether he holds a ring to tie up a horse, or a lantern illuminating the way, he is always positioned at the entrance to a home, ready to assist and welcome visitors. Adding the film reel to the lawn jockey’s extended hand represents the artist presenting his work, as well as Louisville’s International Festival of Film presenting the festival to the community. A final, subtle nod to Louisville is represented in the type treatment of the word “of” to reflect the type style of the Belle of Louisville.
